ENVIRONMENTAL CRISIS IN
LIBERIA
HELP
IS NEEDED
Trash littered in
present-day Monrovia
The
political war for power
struggle is over, but there is
a silent war of human carnage
from sanitary filth and
unhygienic conditions that
have ruined public health in
Liberia. The images are scary
and thought provoking by any
standards. It must claim the
attention of all Liberians and
friends of Liberia to help.
After all, what could be
humanly essential than a
healthy environment where
every human’s participation
can be optimized for the good
of themselves and society?
Yes, the
14-year war had done much
damage to Liberia and is
blamed for much of the
environmental problems. The
national government’s
ability to deliver services,
such as sanitary landfill, an
effective garbage collection
system, safe drinking water,
and latrines, have been
crippled due to limited
resources. Liberians in the
Diaspora can render some help
in the environmental areas to
ease the serious public health
crisis.
It must
be noted, with evident, that
most Liberian organizations
and individuals in the
Diaspora have been helpful in
many areas of social issues to
communities in Liberia but not
much in the environmental
area.
If every
Liberia organization in the
Diaspora adopts a community in
Liberia on environmental
educational awareness and
clean-up services through
existing NGO like the Liberia
Environmental Watch (LEW)
Inc., it would serve as a
paradigm to achieving
environmental protection and
sustainable management to
which good health and
longevity can be assured.
There are
communities in Liberia,
particularly in Monrovia, that
are environmentally filthy,
crying for urgent help.
Monrovia is focused because it
attracts half of Liberia’s
population. Few of the many
names that come to mind are:
New Kru Town, Clara Town,
Logan Town, Via Town, Sayon
Town, Blamo Town, Congo Town,
Buzzy Quarter, West Point,
Point Four, Bong Mine Bridge,
Mandingo Quarter, Slip Way,
PHP, Bye Pass, Jamaica Road,
Shoe Factory, Cow Factory,
Fiama, Battery Factory, Mamba
Point, etc.
LEW is
championing the cause in
tackling the environmental
problems, building capacity in
communities necessary through
its initiated environmental
educational awareness pilot
project dabbed Train the
Trainer to Train which has
commenced in New Kru Town, and
will little be duplicated in
other communities. Adopt a
community and LEW will
collaborate and provide the
expertise to educate the
community and conduct cleanup
services.
