National Krao Association gears up for convention '06

Friday, August 25, 2006

By Tewroh-Wehtoe Sungbeh

The National Krao (Kru) Association in the Americas (NKAA), and descendents of Krao people in the United States and Liberia will meet in the Atlanta suburb of Doraville, Georgia September 1-3, for its 15th annual national convention.

The convention will feature Krao’s own Anthony Seyon Nagbe of Tejajlu fame, and the sensational Tarloh Qwiwonkpa, both of whom are expected to “bring the house down,” according to Acting President Mabel Jaryenneh Green, and entertain us to some of the materials that made them our favorite Krao performers.”

Candidates Emmanuel Wettee and Emmanuel Toe, both of whom are running to be president of the Union of Liberian Associations in the Americas (ULAA), and are also Krao are expected to attend the convention.

Because of the many crisis affecting Krao people in Liberia, especially in area such as New Kru Town where Krao people from the Krao counties are heavily concentrated, the host Atlanta chapter decided to change the usual single guest speaker format of the past to that of a four-member panel of experts to discuss health, education, environment/erosion and pharmacology.

The panelists will discuss high blood pressure (hypertension) and diabetes in our communities, how to control and treat the silent killer; the high cost of drugs, the effects of expired drugs on the market, and how can the association provide inexpensive drugs to Krao people at home; the impact of the civil war on the Liberian educational system, how it affected Krao children since the end of the war, and how Krao people in the Diaspora can help; the environment and the Liberian nation, how the stubborn erosion and sanitation crisis has affected Krao communities, and how can the association help?

Mabel Jaryenneh Green, the Acting President is hoping that the national body and its Executive Committee will listen to the issues and act immediately by implementing the recommendations from the panelist, as the “Krao people will surely appreciate the help from us,” she said.

The national chapter is calling for unity among its many chapters across the United States. And the metro Atlanta chapter is also calling for unity -  “Barpupolaeboh,” or “Let’s us unite,” among Krao people in the various counties at home and abroad.

The local chapter is appealing to non-Krao people and friends of Krao people to attend the convention to help raise needed funds for its many projects including Redemption Hospital in the Borough of New Kru Town.
