Rep. K. Murray's antics ground for impeachment and prosecution

Saturday, January  27, 2007

   By Tewroh-Wehtoe Sungbeh

Just when Liberians were beginning to debate the impeachment petition of activist Mulbah Morlu Jr., against President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, there came the sudden news of a legislative coup d’ tat against Speaker Edwin Melvin Snowe by one Representative KetterKumehn Murrah, who was opportunistic enough to garner the strength, the courage and his friends to carry out an act that proved not to be in the interest of the nation.

Speaker Edwin M. Snowe                 Rep. K. Murray

After all, this is Liberia, a country where the mere whisper of imminent confusion can wreak havoc and despair; a country where deportees and criminals on the run from justice elsewhere can quickly camouflage themselves as model citizens with the intention of running for office, or get a presidential cabinet appointment simply because it is their native land where they can take advantage of an ailing and unsophisticated system with enough room for people like KetterKumehn Murray and others waiting to exploit Liberia in the name of patriotism.

By The FBI

KETTEHKUMUE EARL MURRAY
UNLAWFUL FLIGHT TO AVOID PROSECUTION - INDECENT LIBERTIES WITH A CHILD, ATTEMPTED RAPE (FIRST DEGREE - VICTIM UNDER 13)

Date of Birth: August 28, 1950
Place of Birth: Liberia
Height: 5'11"
Weight: 170 to 176 pounds
NCIC: W148907970

Nationality: Liberian
Sex: Male
Race: Black
Eyes: Brown
Hair: Black
Occupation: Minister, Instructor at a Seminary
Scars and Marks: None known
Remarks: Murray may travel to Africa; Texas; Denver, Colorado; New York; Mexico; Minnesota; and Rhode Island.

So how did this man who is wanted by local and federal law enforcement authorities for allegedly attempting to rape a child in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina as reported by the Public Agenda's and FBI's Web sites get to be a member of the House of Representatives and become Chairman of its Standing Committee, in the first place?

According to those Web sites, an arrest warrant was issued on April 15, 1997, while a federal arrest warrant was issued on April 7, 1999, for unlawful flight to avoid prosecution.

KetterKumehn Murrah did things his way by going after a corrupt and unpopular Speaker in an aggressive way; and got famous by exposing his own tawdry past in an aggressive way also. He raised his profile by basking in the glory as the guy who made Edwin Melvin Snowe to sweat in his pants like he never did before, and brought the Speaker to his knees by ousting him from a job Snowe bought just when Liberia tried to be democratic in 2006.

With an obsession to remove Snowe with whom he worked during their days with their mentor, Charles Taylor, and a stubborn mindset that refuses to listen to anyone, not even the Supreme Court of the land, KetterKumehn Murrah and his 46 like-minded colleagues of the House of Representatives who joined him showed contempt for the highest court of the land when they blatantly refused to honor the Writ of Prohibition that states the opposite of what the rebels wanted to hear.

“You are hereby commanded to instruct the respondents to return to status quo, which is the petitioner/Speaker Melvin Snow maintain his position until the Respondents show cause why the peremptory writ should not be issued,” noted justice Gladys K. Johnson, who wrote for the majority.

Edwin Melvin Snowe has been a train wreck from the day he occupied the position of Speaker of the House of Representatives. From his singular attempt to conduct the foreign policy of the nation when he presented a “purported Joint Resolution” on the one-China policy, to his incompetence, his lack of leadership and a travel ban instituted earlier by the United Nations made him an obvious target, which strengthened his detractors to seek his forceful removal from office.

Where were the buffoons, anyway, when Snowe ran for the position of Speaker in 2006? Did these guys not join the majority in electing him Speaker? Did they not see the flaws in Snowe then when they elected him? Why now?

Who’s violating the laws of the land now by refusing to accept the ruling of the Supreme Court of Liberia? Is the removal of Edwin Snowe from office so important that Murray and his ilk must assault a legitimate institution like the Supreme Court in the most egregious way to make a point? Does he understand the damage his action will cost this fragile body in times like these? And if a member of the House of Representatives cannot uphold the ruling of the Supreme Court of the land, does he expect an ordinary Liberian - the common man and woman to do the same?

Murray pushed a self-centered, corrupt, disrespectful, narrow and arrogant agenda that is out of step with the thinking of most Liberians who want Edwin Melvin Snowe removed from the Speaker’s chair, but cannot join Murray and his friends because of the way they are conducting themselves. Now they are talking about electing a new Speaker, even though there's a ruling from the court concerning this matter that did not favor them.

Snowe can be removed from office only if he’s found guilty of a crime in a legitimate and competent court of law before jurors of his peers, or he can be removed from office when he is censured and disciplined by a credible majority of his colleagues for crimes committed against the nation and its people, and not because KetterKumehn Murrah don’t like him and wants him out.

KetterKumehn Murrah did not do his case against Snowe any justice, and has also been labeled as corrupt. According to reports, it is believed each wayward member of his team was paid a sum of $5,000 in return for their signature to impeach Snowe, which is a felony in the second degree, a clear violation of Section 12.50 of the Liberian penal code.

Murray’s selfish act created a constitutional crisis and lawlessness and undermined the rule of law, peace and tranquility.

Murray’s actions also transformed Snowe overnight from being an outlaw and an incompetent legislator who bought his way into the Speakership, to a victim, who is being persecuted because Murray and others are either jealous of him and don’t want to work with him or are being influenced by President Sirleaf, who has since been accused by Snowe as the main force behind the coup.

As is always the case with personnel matters, President Sirleaf, whose name just cannot seem to go away because of the fingers Snowe continues to point at her for her alleged involvement in this matter is completely reticent, except for a brief statement from her press secretary, Cyrus Badio, who denied any involvement from the Executive Mansion.

I never liked Edwin Melvin Snowe, and I never supported his bid to be Speaker of the Liberian House of Representatives in any way, shape or form, either, because of his checkered past. I strongly believe he is an embarrassment to the Liberian nation, and hoped he didn’t run for the office in the first place.

Edwin Melvin Snowe is corrupt, and he did some stupid and unpopular things before and during his tenure as Speaker. KetterKumehn Murray struck out of my book for what he did to the nation's confidence as compared to what he did not do.

Murray blew what many believed to be a good case against Snowe he and his colleagues should have won had they not engaged in corruption, and had they not disrespected the ruling of the Supreme Court of the Republic of Liberia.

Instead of impeaching Edwin Melvin Snowe now, I strongly believe Murray should be impeached and prosecuted for his disdain of the high court and for bringing shame to his legislative office.
